Grain Valley grabs league win over Excelsior

Jeramey Maynard would probably consider himself a blue-collar quarterback – and a team player.

When asked about his ability to attack Excelsior Springs’ pass defense in Friday night’s 48-28 home win, the senior signal-caller attributed it to the Eagles’ work ethic.

“We work hard in practice; and we just worked on our short game a lot – one, two, three (steps and) just throwing,” said Maynard, who completed 21 of 33 passes for 261 yards and six touchdowns during the Missouri River Valley Conference West victory.

That work in practice didn’t start producing touchdowns until the second quarter. The Eagles (2-2 overall, 1-0 Missouri River Valley Conference) got inside the Tigers’ 25-yard line twice during the first quarter, only to lose the ball on downs both times.

On the other hand, the Tigers (0-4, 0-2) capitalized when they got near the Grain Valley end zone. Nick Masoner capped a seven-play, 45-yard drive with an 11-yard TD run and his extra-point kick with 2:57 left in the first quarter.
