In a matchup of Midland Empire Conference unbeatens, the mainstay looked the part.

The Maryville Spoofhounds scored on their first three possessions and forced a trio of three-and-outs to open Friday’s 41-7 dismantling of Savannah, earning yet another share of the MEC championship.

“It felt good to have a challenge, finally,” Maryville linebacker Tyler McGary said. “They had some good backs. Our defense really held up and our coaches had us prepared.”

Maryville (7-1, 6-0 MEC) limited the Savannah (5-3, 5-1) ground attack to just 129 yards and kept the Savannah offense at bay all night. The Savages entered scoring 57 points per contest, though the defending Class 3 champs proved too much in sloppy field conditions.

“To clinch a share of the MEC championship was something we wanted to accomplish,” Maryville coach Matt Webb said. “Seven points is just under our average this year. Our defense did a great job.”

Ben Walker put together an efficient and effective outing under center, finishing 8-of-13 passing for 183 yards and two touchdowns, highlighted by a momentous third-down conversion in the first quarter.

Facing a third-and-15 with a 6-0 after a Tyler Houchin run, Walker fired 39 yards downfield for his favorite target. Tate Oglesby laid out in a full extension to move the chains, setting up a 9-yard run by Houchin for a quick 14-0 lead.

“Tate’s a heck of an athlete. There’s a lot of guys who aren’t gonna dive in the middle of a mudhole when it’s not a perfect ball,” Webb said. “That’s a great teammate right there, laying out and making his quarterback look right by hauling in the ball.”

Walker found Oglesby again on the first play of the second quarter on a leaping, juggling catch for a 13-yard score and 21-0 lead.

“The offense is really good when it gets flowing,” Walker said. “We have Tate out there catching balls, we have Tyler carrying the load and have explosive plays from Eli. Our offense is really good right now.”
