Olathe South became just the second team this season to score on Lawrence Free State as Jai Haynes returned a kick 80-yards trimming the Firebird lead to 27-7 with 6:08 remaining in the first half. In what could have been a turning point in the game, Free State responded like a championship team would. While a long drive capped off with a touchdown would have been impressive, Free State isn’t about just impressing, they’re about making a statement.

Following the Falcon score, Free State return man LJ Mack sprinted down the left side of the field making two guys miss as he raced past Olathe South 95-yards for a touchdown as Free State took a commanding 34-7 lead en route to a 54-13 victory.

“We played well tonight,” said Free State head coach Bob Lisher. “We got off to a strong start and I’m proud of the way we competed.”

Touchdowns have become a frequent trend for the Firebirds happening early and often during games. Friday was no different as the Firebirds scored first with 9:36 to play in the opening frame. Malik Berry took a snap scrambling to his right before plowing over Falcon defenders as he found the end-zone from 25-yards out as Free State took a 7-0 lead.

Fast forward two minutes and Free State tallied seven more points as Berry hit Keenan Garber on a 40-yard touchdown pass. The Firebirds ended the opening quarter with a third score, this time from Jax Dineen on a nine-yard run as Free State led 20-0 after the first quarter.

The scoring didn’t slow in the second quarter as Free State tacked on another touchdown with 6:23 to play as Berry found Garber for his second TD of the night, this time from 12-yards out. Free State ended the opening half with Berry connecting with Garber for their third touchdown of the night as the Firebirds led 41-7 at the break.

Free State continued to show its strength in the second half as Berry scored his fifth touchdown on the night, this time on a 10-yard keeper as Free State led 47-7.

With the win, Free State improved to 6-0 on the season and will face Shawnee Mission East next week. Olathe South (3-3) will host Olathe West.
