Columbia Hickman traveled to the historic North Kansas City stadium to try and ruin the Hornets undefeated season. The Hornets would have none of that, as they outlasted the Kewpies 34-20.

The fans had barely a chance to be seated when CJ Price took the first snap from scrimmage and went 73 yards for the score.  Price spoke about the play, “It’s a simple handoff, we call it Iso, it’s a big play for us. Linemen really opened it up, I don’t think they were ready for that.”

Hickman answered less than 90 seconds later when Javean Brown connected with Courtney Watkins for a 41-yard touchdown.

Hickman took the lead on a 7-yard run by Brown.  Bradley West converted the kick and Hickman trailed 13-6

With just over a minute left in the first quarter Price scored on a 43-yard run. Ronaldo Calderon’s kick tied the score at 13.

Brown scored on a 7-yard run and with the kick Hickman was up again by seven. These would be the points scored by the Kewpies.

The Hornets took over with 2:49 left in the half and began their drive. Twice the Hornets had to convert on 4th down including a 4th and 11, from the Kewpies 14-yard line when Seth Mattly found Price on screen pass for the touchdown, tying the game at the half.

Price and the Hornets put the game away with two more touchdown runs in the 4th quarter, the first from 44 yards and the second from 47.

After the game Hornets head coach Leon Douglas, talked about what Price means to his team, “He is our catalyst, and not just because of his production, or his ability. He has the respect of his team by his leadership, and his hard work.”

The Kewpies record dropped to 2-6, and next week they will be home to face Truman.

North Kansas City improved to 7-0 and will travel to face their rivals Oak Park.
