All week, the coaching staff at Lafayette challenged its defense to play with intensity.

The Fighting Irish responded well.

The Irish defense had seven turnovers on the night and the offense converted those turnovers into touchdowns as Lafayette easily handled the Chillicothe Hornets 56-6 at Scott Marriott Field at Alumni Field.

“We haven’t come out and played intense and taken it to the opposing offense once this season,” Lafayette coach Eric McDowell said. “I really let them know all week in practice and this is the first time all season our defense has really shown up at the beginning of the game and been the aggressor.”

In the first half the Lafayette offense, led by junior quarterback Daeton McGaughy, moved the ball at will, mostly through the air, capitalizing on four Chillicothe fumbles turning each into scores.

McGaughy hit three different receivers for touchdowns while also scoring on a four-yard touchdown run to give the Irish (5-1, 3-1 MEC) a 42-6 halftime lead over the Hornets (1-5, 1-3).

“Daeton makes a lot of plays. He’s not super flashy,” McDowell said of his signal caller. “I don’t think people realize how good he is sometimes.”

Miles Henderson was on the receiving end of an 11-yard touchdown strike to open the scoring for the Irish. He later hauled in a 30-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Derrick May had two scoring receptions of 9 and 3 yards, while Taylor Bledsoe added a 10-yard receiving touchdown.

“They’re a good group of receivers and we don’t just have one we go to, we have four, five or six even,” McDowell said.

Coming out after intermission, the Irish defense pick up right where they left off.
