Louisburg holds off Piper to move to 4-0

In a battle of undefeated teams, Louisburg travelled to Piper for a hard fought 28 - 21, victory. The game was not flawless, both teams were flagged for numerous penalties, including both teams called for an illegal forward pass.

Piper head coach, Rick Pollard, when asked what he wanted out of his offense he said, “Play fast.”

hat is exactly what happened on the first play from scrimmage. Dalton White kept an, “Option - Read”, and went 69 yards for the score. Johnny Moon converted the PAT, and after :17, the Pirates led 7 - 0.

The Wildcats took the kickoff and marched down the field, and Madden Rutherford connected with a 22 yard strike, to Joshua Casey for the touchdown. Drake Varns missed the PAT, and the Pirates led 7 - 6.

After the Wildcat defense forced a punt, they ran the ball effectively Austin Moore refused to be stopped on a 12 yard run for the score. The Wildcats handed off to Moore who converted the two point run, and the Cats were up by 14 - 7.

The Pirates were in punt formation, when Brandon Cooper blocked the punt the Wildcats took possession in the Pirate 15 yard line. Moore fumbled the handoff and it was scooped up by Brandon Snell and went 89 yards for a touchdown, to tie the game.

The Wildcats made a big defensive stand to get the ball back on their 8 yard line. Quickly they moved downfield and with just :17 left in the half, Rutherford found Brayden Gage in the corner of the end zone, and the Wildcats went to half up 21 - 14.

Neither team scored in the 3rd quarter, but at 9:21 of the 4th quarter was the play of the game. The Wildcats were facing 4th and goal from the 31 yard line. Rutherford arched a perfect spiral to Brandon Copper to make it a two score game.

After the game Rutherford described the play in detail, “On the 3rd down play we had trips to the left and a single receiver to the right. It seemed that the safety, bit on the wheel route out of the trips. We ran the same play and just flipped it, with one receiver to the left. I threw it up there and, he just, made a play.

In the closing seconds White scored on another run for the final points. The Pirates drop to 3 - 1, and they will travel to Tonganoxie next week.

Louisburg moved their record to 4-0, and they will be on the road next week, facing off with Eudora.
