On a soggy Friday night in Smithville a second-quarter spurt sparked the Warriors to a 29-0 victory over previously unbeaten Grain Valley.

After a scoreless first quarter, Smithville took control in the second cashing in on fourth down. With 7:37 to go in the half, senior quarterback Kellen Simoncic found Jake Fisher in the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown pass giving the Warriors a 7-0 lead.

Just 15 seconds later, Smithville senior linebacker Brian Boyd recovered a fumble deep in Grain Valley territory. The turnover resulted in the Warriors’ second score of the game as Liam Wolfe drilled a 35-yard field goal to put the hosts up 10-0 with 7:22 left in the half.

Smithville came up with some more fourth-down magic with less than three minutes to play in the second quarter. Isaac Miller broke through the Eagles’ defense for 36 yards and a touchdown giving the Warriors a 16-0 lead at the break.

"We had them backed up and knew we needed to make some plays,"

Smithville head coach Jason Ambroson said. "The elements were the same for both teams and we showed our resilience. It was a really good football game and we made the plays necessary to come out on top."

Still leading by 16 after three, Smithville put the game away in the fourth as Miller scored his second and third rushing touchdowns of the night in a less than two-minute span.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, Miller punched it in from 33 yards out to make it 23-0 with 11:33 left in the game.

Just over one minute later, Miller rumbled 78 yards for the score giving the Warriors their final margin of victory.

"We got better this week," Ambroson said. "I have a great group of coaches and a great group of kids. We has a really good week of practice."

The Class 4, No. 8 Warriors (3-0) are one the road at Raytown South next week, while Grain Valley looks to rebound at home against Platte County.
