St. Thomas Aquinas 30, Blue Valley 14
Blue Valley and St. Thomas Aquinas traded touchdowns in the first half, with the Saints taking a 21-14 lead into the locker room in this EKL battle to kick off the season. It was the play of tailback Tyron Young that may have been the deciding factor as the Saints went on to beat the Tigers 30-14.

Young finished the game with just two touchdowns, but it was those two touchdowns that were the tying and go-ahead scores for the Saints right before half time. Add in his 256 yards rushing on 26 carries that helped propel Aquinas to its 1-0 record.

For Blue Valley (0-1), Eric Olson scored from a yard out, and Tate Raboin connected with Cameron Green on a 10-yard strike.

St. James Academy 41, Blue Valley Northwest 13
It was all St. James Academy at home against Blue Valley Northwest 41-13 as these two EKL teams ushered in the 2018 high school football season. Thunder quarterback Jack Moellers had nearly 200 yards of total offense by halftime and finished the game with 159 through the air and 112 on the ground. He threw for a 50-yard score and ran for a 72-yard touchdown before intermission.

Michael Tujague who also came in to play quarterback added another touchdown through the air and two more rushing in the first half. St. James (1-0) did spread the ball around offensively.  Five different receivers had catches, and five different rushers ran the ball.

The Huskies (0-1) were able to get on the scoreboard early in the second half with a Sam Sliefert to J. Michael Sturdivant 9-yard pass and then added another from a Sliefert 9-yard run.

Mill Valley 35, Blue Valley West 24
The aerial fireworks were on display in this back-and-forth affair between EKL rivals Blue Valley West and Mill Valley Friday night with Mill Valley besting West 35-24. Led by Mill Valley quarterback Jordan Preston, he threw for two touchdowns and 235 yards in the victory. Receiver Tyler Green caught both of the scores and had 127 yards receiving.

Not even the air attack of West's bomb thrower Greg Riddle was enough to overcome what Mill Valley (1-0) cooked up. Riddle put up gaudy numbers himself, chucking up 271 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver David Brown had 12 catches for 238 yards and was on the opposite end of all three of Riddle's scores.

Blue Valley West starts the season 0-1.

Atchison 26, Washington 7
Atchison upended Washington Friday night 26-7 in their Kansas City Atchison League opener when fullback Corey Robinson capped it with a one-yard run at the 7:44 mark of the fourth quarter to put the Redmen up two scores to salt it away. He added another one with 2:06 for good measure.

Robinson had three touchdowns total on the night, but he was just part of what Atchison (1-0) was able to do on the ground, grinding out 296 yards among seven different rushers. They carried the ball 52 times for an average yard per rush of 5.7.

Washington's lone score came in the first quarter on the defensive side of the ball when Willie Fields recovered a fumble and took it in from 15 yards out to give the Wildcats (0-1) the brief 7-0 lead.

Blue Valley Southwest 37, Lansing 14
Blue Valley Southwest gave Lansing all they could handle in a 37-14 opener on the Kansas side Friday night. The Timberwolves (1-0) took control in the second quarter, scoring 31 points to put the game away early.

Southwest was led by the play of quarterback Tanner Curry who threw for 276 yards and four touchdowns, hitting Billy Bartlett twice and Nate Adamson and Tommy Zimmerman once. Bartlett had 11 catches for 166 yards.

Lansing (0-1) picked up two scores in the fourth quarter on running back Konner McQuillan two runs of 34 and nine yards. He finished the game with 96 yards rushing while his teammate Derrick Robinson had 143 yards.
