Maryville found itself down at Chillicothe once again, but this time, refused to go quietly into the night.

The Spoofhound defense shut out the Hornets for the rest of the game and their offense scored 20 points to pick up a sixth straight district crown to be brought back to Maryville by way of 20-12 on Friday at Jerry Litton Memorial Stadium.

Coach Matt Webb said his team remained poised even with being down by double digits early.

“Never doubt the courage and commitment of young people today,” Webb said. “That is a group that has become a team throughout the season and formed a bond. There wasn’t any panic being down 12-0.”

Earlier this season, Maryville was shutout at Chillicothe 24-0 on Sept. 1 and allowed more than 300 rushing yards. This time the Hornets were held to just 132 yards on the ground.

Webb gave credit to how the challenges of this season have brought the Spoofhounds together.

“This team (Friday night) was formed off of adversity,” Webb said. “I just thought our kids stayed in, fought and won a war.”

Junior tight end Brady Atwell provided the first score of the night for Maryville with a 53-yard touchdown run that made the score 12-7 with 8 minutes, 24 seconds left in the second quarter.

“That really loosened us up as a team and let us know that we were in this thing,” Webb said. “Brady played unbelievable (Friday night).”
