Coming off their biggest and perhaps most impressive win of the year, the Lafayette Fighting Irish refused to slow down.

Braydon Cox scored three touchdowns, including a 75-yard kickoff return as the Irish defeated Cameron 42-6 on Friday night at Alumni Stadium.

Cox found himself wide open on a pair of passes, but didn’t take any of the credit for himself.

“Good playing by the coach and good blocking by the linemen,” Cox said. “I couldn’t have done it without them. ... “Our receiving coach helped me out and taught me how to get open.”

Cameron (0-7) scored its first touchdown of the season in the 42-6 loss to Lafayette (6-1) on Friday night. The Dragons had been outscored 331-0 before Tristan Michaelis’ 14-yard pass to Nathan Nelson in the third quarter.

The Irish forced two turnovers and allowed only six first downs.

Lafayette coach Bart Hardy made sure to give some younger players playing time after taking a large lead.

“We weren’t sure what they were going to run,” he said. “The defense did a great job. We wanted to get younger guys in and we had that opportunity.”

Cox struck early on a 56-yard pass where he found himself completely behind the Cameron defense. The senior receiver felt “pretty surprised” no one was within 15 yards when he made the catch.

The pair connected again on the third play in the second quarter for a 23-yard touchdown.

Cox finished with 154 total yards and two receptions.
