Grain Valley pitched a second-half shutout but couldn’t overcome a 21-point deficit in a 21-7 loss Friday at St. Joseph Benton, which snapped a 19-game losing streak.
The game was delayed more than an hour in the third quarter due to lightning after Grain Valley (0-2) had scored on Kellen Holland’s 31-yard screen pass to Blake Lacey, set up by Lacey’s 60-yard kick return.
Benton’s Dominic Hill completed 11 of 26 passes for 155 yards and three first-half touchdowns, and Rye’ll Dydell rushed for 118 yards on 26 carries. Benton finished with 359 yards of offense.
“They’re a good team and you can’t take anything away from them,” Grain Valley coach David Allie said. “On both sides of the ball we didn’t help ourselves much. We had some assignments, and a fumble on our first play led to their first score.”
Holland was 11-of-18 passing for 129 yards, but the Eagles managed just 22 rushing yards and had two turnovers.
