As Cody Massey points out, you have to use two hands now to count the number of consecutive wins for Lafayette over Benton in the city's chief high school rivalry.

The Fighting Irish senior wide receiver caught one of Drew Cortez's four touchdown passes as Lafayette pulled away to defeat Benton 40-18 at Sparks Field.

"It means a lot to the North Side," said Massey, who had four catches for 38 yards. "We didn't want to let our community down. It feels great and I couldn't imagine losing."

This outcome wasn't as easy as the score dictated; the Irish scored three times in the second half to pull away for the win.

Lafayette (3-0, 1-0 MEC) broke open the contest with three touchdowns in the second quarter, starting with Massey hauling in a 23-yard score from Cortez. Down 6-0 after a quarter, Lafayette never trailed after Stephen Wilds booted the PAT.

Cortez, who was 19-of-28 passing for 241 yards, tacked on two long touchdown tosses to extend Lafayette's lead. On the first play of Lafayette's next possession, Cortez hit Tyler Burgess for a 57-yard touchdown on slant pattern, and the senior broke a handful of tackles during his sprint up the middle of the field.
