St. Mary's downs Orrick, earns playoff spot

St. Mary’s is headed for the Class 1 football playoffs.

The Trojans held off a winless Orrick team 36-28 Friday night to advance to the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and sixth time in school history.

Drew Huttinger completed 5 of 15 passes for 157 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns and added three two-point conversions to power the Trojans (3-6).

Huttinger’s third touchdown came on a 4-yard fourth-quarter run with 3:33 remaining and capped a game-winning 80-yard drive that took five minutes off the clock.

Orrick had battled back to tie the score 28-28 on Derrick Dennis’ 5-yard run with 8:39 remaining.
