As Van Horn senior Jayvon James continues to amaze his own coach, the Falcons keep reaching heights far beyond anything in their recent past.

James ran for a touchdown, caught two more scores and completed a long pass to set up one of those TD catches, and the Falcons combined that playmaking show with a gritty defensive effort down the stretch Friday to pull off a 26-19 upset over visiting Oak Grove at Truman High School.

By winning Friday’s Class 3 District 15 opener, Van Horn (6-2) not only assured its first winning season since 1997, but also matched its victory total of the past five seasons and put itself in the driver’s seat for a playoff berth.

Sixth-ranked Oak Grove, just eight days removed from being undefeated, also stands at 6-2.

“We’ve always felt like, with this district, as difficult as we knew it would be, if we could get a victory, it would legitimize us as a program,” said Van Horn coach Jeff Tolbert, whose team had to withstand the Panthers’ four-headed rushing attack that produced 314 yards.
