District championships bring out some of the craziest outcomes that the sport can offer, and this Friday proved to be no different for the Trojans.
After a sequence of throwing a pick-six, fumbling their own snap on a punt and making a change at quarterback, not much momentum was on the Park Hill side. This slide continued when only up 24-21, Oak Park DB Donavan Ross intercepted the backup quarterback's throw, and with a convoy of blockers a second pick six seemed inevitable for the senior corner.
However, you can't count points on the board until you're across the goal line. A Trojan offensive lineman forced Donavan Ross to fumble just before he crossed the goal line, forcing a touchback and giving the Park Hill offense a chance to seal the game once again.
The Trojans took advantage of it this time, throwing a game sealing touchdown with 28 seconds on the clock that sent the fans into a frenzy, and the team to the following round defeating Oak Park 31-21
As the game began it was fairly evident Park Hill's priority was to throw the ball, scoring on a short field after a tunnel screen on 3rd down resulted in 60 yards.
Oak Park would follow with a long drive, but after a decision to run a fake punt on 4th & 9 Park Hill took the ball with a short field ahead, and then immediately threw a pick two plays later giving Oak Park the ball with 11 yards until the end zone.
SDSU Commit Travon Pankey would even the score at 7 with a wildcat power with 6 minutes in the quarter.
The Trojans would then respond with two straight scoring drives, one on the ground and one through the air making the score 21-7 with just around 10 minutes in the second.
Although there was blood in the water, the Northmen answered immediately with a 80-yard run off of a triple option from QB Antonio Johnson and led Oak Park into the locker room trailing by one possession 21-14.
After a stop on 4th and 1 for the Northmen, the offense for the boys in blue couldn't get anything of note going. The Trojans would take advantage of a short field due to a short punt into the wind and extended the lead to two possessions with a field goal 24-14 with 4:49 in the 3rd.
After a punt from Oak Park, The Northmen would have their dream sequence on defense. On back to back to back drives the Oakies would force turnovers. The first was a 50-yard pick six from Donavan Ross, breaking on a slant route taking it to the house.
The following would be a snap that ended up giving OP the ball at the opposite red zone after the long snapper undershot the punter by 5 yards. However, QB Antonio Johnson would take a 23 yard sack forcing kicker Zander Culp into a long field goal, ending up just short of making the 48 yarder.
The final turnover happened to be an interception punch out at the goaline that didn't do much for Oak Park. After a drive that saw 4 3rd down conversions and ate up 9 minutes on the clock, the Trojans ran a play action qb blast to the right on 4th down and found a wide open receiver for a walk in touchdown. The Trojans will face Liberty next week for a chance to advance.
