Bentonville (Ark.) 35, Mill Valley 28
Despite quarterback Cooper Marsh’s three touchdown runs and another passing, the host and reigning Class 5A champion Jaguars fell behind 14-0 early and trailed the whole way for the first loss of the season.

Twice a Marsh QB keeper from the 1-yard-line had Mill Valley (2-1) within a point of Bentonville -- Arkansas Class 7A semifinalists in 2019. His touchdown as time expired in the first half made it 21-20. He did it again with 7:57 left to make the score 28-27.

But the Tigers (3-0), who made the 3-plus hour bus ride to the Kansas City area for the second Friday in a row -- they won 21-17 at Rockhurst last week, made the most of Andrew Edwards’ efficient 11-for-15 passing and touchdowns of 76 yards (giving the Tigers a 14-0 lead), 59 yards (21-7) and 80 yards (28-20).

DeSoto 49, Basehor-Linwood 28
Jackson Miller accounted for five touchdowns -- three rushing and two passing -- to lead the host Wildcats in their United Kansas Conference opener.

After Bobcats running back Zach Sisemore tied the game at 14 less than three minutes into the second quarter, DeSoto (2-1, 1-0 United Kansas Conference) 35 consecutive points, including four straight in the second and third quarters involving Miller, who ran for 114 yards and passed for 110.

Tyler Schultze added two touchdowns and 104 yards on just four carries.

Sisemore added a late touchdown for Basehor-Linwood (1-2, 1-1) and finished with a game-high 182 yards rushing.

St. James Academy 42, Eudora 24
Dakota Burritt completed 75 percent of his passes and threw four touchdowns as the Thunder -- ranked No. 5 in Class 4A by Kpreps.com -- emerged with a road win to go to 1-1.

On the way to 223 passing yards, Burritt twice connected with Tyler Claiborm on touchdowns -- including a 76-yarder that was his longest completion of the night.

Claiborn finished with 121 yards receiving, while running back LaJames White averaged more than 15 yards per carry in totaling 156 yards rushing and adding two touchdowns.

Quarterback Zeke Reazin scored twice for the Cardinals (1-2) in the loss.

Piper 39, Leavenworth 14
Cory Macon made an impact on both sides of the ball, running for three touchdowns and receiving a successful 2-point conversion to lead the Pirates on offense, then recovering a fumble for safety at defensive end for visiting Piper (2-1).

Leavenworth (0-2) enjoyed an early 7-0 lead that unraveled quickly with Macon’s safety as the first quarter expired. Brandon Snell returned the ensuing free kick for touchdown and the 2-point conversion made it 10-7 in a matter of seconds.

Darius McNeal added to the standout defensive performance with a 56-yard interception to make it 17-7 midway through the second quarter. From there, the rout was on.
