North Kansas City 42, Platte County 37
Roman Vibar’s interception return for touchdown in the final minute proved to be enough as the visiting Hornets overcame a 31-7 third-quarter deficit to stun the reigning Class 4 runner-up Pirates.

Vibar’s pick-six was just one of the pivotal plays that helped NKC (3-1) mount its comeback. Malik Johnson also returned an interception for touchdown in the third quarter, while Kellen Powell also had a defensive return for touchdown.

And with eight minutes left, Oliver Norris returned a blocked field goal to give the Hornets their first lead at 35-31.

All that while the Hornets offense was mostly stagnant and plagued by turnovers as well -- a pick-six returned by Garrett Smith made it 31-7. NKC was held to just 198 yards by the Pirates (3-1).

Platte County quarterback Christopher Ruhnke helped the Pirates early, tying the game 7-7 with his 2-yard run and connecting with Colby Rollins for 49 yards to go ahead 24-7.

He finished with 361 yards passing, but interceptions ended up being the difference in the end.

Rockhurst 36, Blue Springs South 14
Bobby Hummel passed for a touchdown and ran for another, and Cashius Howell rushed for 174 yards -- including a 74-yard touchdown to lead the host Hawklets (2-2).

Rockhurst’s defense came through with five interceptions by five different players, with Gavin O’Doyle and Johnny Pascuzzi returning their picks for touchdown.

For the Jaguars (0-4), quarterback Luke Fellers passed for two touchdowns and 215 yards while leading the team with 83 yards on the ground.

Raymore=Peculiar 25, Lee’s Summit North 7
Led by Conrad Hawley’s pair of passing touchdowns and Nick Karr’s 65-yard touchdown run, the host Panthers made it four-in-a-row to start 2020.

Ray-Pec (4-0, 3-0 Suburban Gold) added a punt block that was recovered for a touchdown by Ethan George.

Quarterback Tre Baker connected with Gracen Bell for a touchdown with 6:08 in the game to prevent the Broncos (2-2, 1-2) from being shutout.

Liberty North 41, Staley 13

Cade DeValkenaere had two touchdown passes and ran for one more for the visiting Eagles.

DeValkenaere split time at quarterback with Sam VanDyne, who connected for Kaidan Armstead for 46 yards to make the score 7-0 in the first quarter.

The two combined to go 11 of 15 for 193 yards, while Armstrong had seven catches for 109 yards and caught a touchdown pass from each (2-2).

Jehr Fowler had a pair of touchdown passes to lead Staley (1-3).

Kearney 70, Ruskin 20
Kaden Borchardt’s four rushing touchdowns helped turn what was a competitive game through a quarter-and-a-half into a runaway for the host Bulldogs.

After a flurry of scoring -- 21 points in the first 95 seconds of the game -- the Golden Eagles (1-2, 0-1 Suburban Blue) led 14-7, Kearney (2-2, 1-2) took over.

Ian Acosta had an 8-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14. Braxton Breedlove got a safety on a tackle for loss to give Kearney its first lead since Luke Noland’s opening kickoff return touchdown at 16-14.

Then it became the Borchardt show as he scored on runs of 13, 7, 13 and 29 in the span of a quarter. By 3:05 left in the third, Kearney was ahead 57-20.

During the run, Acosta added a 21-yard run for his second TD of the game.

For Ruskin, WIlliam Sanders provided a standout effort, running for two touchdowns and 123 yards. And his interception return at 10:25 left in the first had given the Golden Eagles a 14-7 lead.

Lawson 10, West Platte 6
Trystan Brightman’s 79-yard second-quarter kickoff return ended up being all visiting Lawson needed against its KCI Conference rival to claim its first win of 2020.

Just 13 seconds earlier, Brandon James gave West Platte (2-2, 1-1 KCI) the lead with a 27-yard run.

After that sequence, defense took over and, except for Xander Mavel’s 45-yard field goal for teh Cardinals (1-2, 1-1) the scoreboard remained the same.

James led all players with 174 yards of offense.
