It was an interesting first week of the high school football season. There were some big-time performances, a few upsets and of course our annual rain and lightning delays.
All in all, it was a successful night and there were a few storylines that popped up.
Platte County will always have a quarterback – Or so it seems. The Pirates graduated three-year starter Justin Mitchell and Tanner Clarkson steps in and throws six touchdowns in his first game as the No. 1 guy. Pretty impressive for the first time out.
Lee’s Summit West has some athletes – Everyone knew about Mario Goodrich. He can star on both sides of the ball and was going to be a focal point for the Titans this season. Phillip Brooks wasn’t unknown but his performance against Blue Springs South was special. Almost 400 total yards and three TDs made a splash in week No. 1.
Pembroke Hill didn’t quit – Trailing most of the night at St. Joseph LeBlond the Raiders kept at it and found a way to come home with a 30-27 win after trailing 21-6 at the half. Senior running back Yakini Kasimu led the way with 197 yards and one TD on the ground and a 76-yard reception for a touchdown. It’s only one game but he could be a name to watch in what could be a good year for Pembroke Hill.
Liberty North came ready to play – The Eagles road the enthusiasm of opening a new stadium with a turnover and a touchdown in the first minute of the game. Staley would take control of the game from that point on but North wasn’t awed by its new surroundings.
The Interscholastic League could be much improved – One week isn’t a season but Lincoln College Prep and Kansas City Central stepped out of the league and held their own. Central fell to Hogan Prep Academy 28-22 with a team that has some good talent and consistency with the coaching staff. The Eagles could be a team to watch in the IL. Lincoln Prep went to West Platte and fell 36-26. The Blue Tigers have long been at the top of the IL and new coach William Lowe is looking to continue that strong run. Good starts even if they didn’t come out on top.
It was an interesting weekend all the way around. It should be a good week No. 2 and just wait, Kansas joins the fun and then we will finally have football season totally underway. I can’t wait.
