Mill Valley showed why they are the five-time defending Class 5A state champions in a state regional playoff matchup against Spring Hill Friday night at Mill Valley High School stadium. And why it is a strong contender to get No. 6.

The Jaguars showed off their nearly unstoppable rushing attack with an overpowering defense to win its 27th consecutive state playoff game 42-6 over Spring Hill.

Junior running back Reggie Reece ran for 252 yards and three touchdowns and senior quarterback Connor Bohon ran for two more scores as the Jaguars rolled to a 28-0 lead by halftime.

The Jaguars, 9-1, move on to face undefeated and top-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas in a sectional playoff contest Friday at St. Thomas Aquinas.

“We played really good defense, especially against the run,” Mill Valley coach Joel Applebee said. “The offense took care of things when they needed to. It was a really good team win. I thought we played well in all phases.”

Reece, a 6-foot-1, 203-pound junior, eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark for the season and has scored 23 touchdowns in establishing himself as one of the top running backs in the state with a blend of power and sprinter speed. Two of his touchdowns Friday came on 66-yard runs, the first one with 2:28 left in the first quarter that broke the ice and gave Mill Valley a 7-0 lead. He burst through a nice hole right up the middle and could not be caught.

“As soon as I saw that trap, and the cut block, and the tackle coming down and hitting the linebacker I was gone,” Reece said. “Breaking long runs is a huge goal of mine and getting points on the board. It felt great.”

After Bohon ran for his two scores in the second quarter Reece had a 15-yard TD run to close the scoring in the first half, and then had another 66-yard home run in the third quarter that made it 35-0.

Spring Hill finishes the season 8-2. The Broncos, which came into the game averaging 30 points a game, could get little going offensively. They lost senior standout running back Patrick Stumpff, who rushed for more than 1,200 yards this season, after his 12-yard gain on the first offensive play of the game due to a leg injury. He was not able to return.  The Broncos punted five times, turned the ball over on downs three other possessions, and lost a fumble.

They avoided a shutout when Jackson Torrez scored on a 2-yard run with 1:21 left in the game.

“We came together as a defense. I think overall, though, it was a great game, a great win to come together,” said senior defensive standout Jayden Woods, who has committed to Penn State. Woods, a 6-4, 233-pound linebacker/edge rusher, said the team knew stopping the Spring Hill rushing game would be a challenge.

“We prepared for that all week,” he said. “They are 74 percent run, so we prepared for that all week,” he said. “They ended up passing a little bit in the first half, so that caught us a little off guard, but we were able to rally and come back and finish them off.”

Broncos coach Jason Feeback was gracious in defeat and reflected on a great season overall.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this team,” he said. “This is a special group, really special. “Losing Patrick on the first play was tough, though Hank (Kotchavar) did a good job filling in. But no excuses, it was a tough night. There’s a reason that team has won five state championships in a row and heading for No. 6.”

Kochavar was a workhorse in Stumpff’s absence. He finished with 116 yards on 23 carries.
