Football is the ultimate team sport. It takes everyone on the roster to win a game on Friday nights. Coaching a football team is the same. While the head coach gives the interview, and the record is next to his name it’s not the work of just one person that brings home victories.
This season PrepsKC and DM Injury Law will honor those assistant coaches who do the little things behind the scenes that not only lead to wins but develop athletes not just as players but people too.
Each week head coaches from across the Metro will nominate their staff for the honor. PrepsKC will select one staff to have their story told and be honored for their work.
This week’s DM Injury Law Coaching Staff of the Week is from Park Hill South. The Panthers held off Staley 13-12 in the first round of the Missouri Class 6 playoffs.
South dominated time of possession with 33 minutes with the ball to control the game. The Panthers also got a good game out of its special teams as standout kicker Asher Huffman converted a 45-yard field goal and a school record 57-yard field goal.
The defense held Staley to 35 passing yards and that kept the Falcons to just 12 points after averaging 28 points over the last four weeks.
Head Coach Justin Poncy said his staff has worked hard all season and the improvement at the end of year shows what the hard work has done.
“I'm proud of our staff for the continued work that they've poured into our team through the ups and the downs of our season,” Poncy said. “We talk a lot about getting as much juice from the squeeze of our athletes in coaching and our group has done an amazing job in that! Practice after practice, week after week, they show up ready to work.”
The Park Hill South staff members are Eric Botts, Rich Fullerton, Derek Gray, Mike Kelly, Miles Pitts, Dustin Reffitt, Jake Sledd, Rosey Gipson, Donovan Bustamante, Kirk Henry, Jay Jensik, Zac Miller and Steve Lawrence.
This is the final DM Injury Law Coaching Staff of the Week honor for 2024.
