History is on the line in Friday's Kansas 5A state playoff game between Washington and Leavenworth.
The host Wildcats have never won a state playoff game. Leavenworth will try to keep it that way. The postseason contest is the DM Injury Law Metro Game of the Week and shapes up to be a good one.
Washington finished the regular season with an impressive 6-2 mark, the most wins for that program since 2019. The Wildcats finished third in the Meadowlark League with a 4-2 record. Their only losses came at the hands of league champion Atchison (7-1, 6-0) and upstart Topeka Highland Park (6-2, 5-1).
Leavenworth enters postseason play with a 5-3 record. After a two-game losing skid to open the season, the Pioneers have won five of its last six games. Last season, Leavenworth won just two times. The program's turnaround is worth noting.
Washington is led by quarterback Savion Stone but its defense has recorded three shutouts this season. Keep an eye out for ball-hawking defensive back and return man Jaylin Washington, a talented junior with tantalizing speed.
Another Wildcat to watch: sophomore Cam’Ron Fields, who doubles as a wide receiver and running back.
