Welcome to Five From Friday our weekly feature that highlights some of the best quotes, notes, stats and performances of the games Friday night.
Quote of the night
“I keep telling (coach Chad Frigon) every week that I love catching the ball, too. I’ve been preaching to him to let me run some routes, and finally starting to let me go and do that. I’m starting to have some fun.” – Liberty senior running back Jaxon Hicks after the Jays 36-13 win over Oak Park. In the game Hicks had a 43-yard touchdown catch and run for his second straight game with a TD reception.
Stat line of the night
Gabe Fields, St. Joseph Central – The senior tailback had a homecoming game to remember with 474 yards rushing and eight total touchdowns in the Indians 55-6 win over Excelsior Springs. Oh and he was the homecoming king as well.
Call of the night
Blue Valley west trailed all game against rival Blue Valley. The Jaguars rallied down 28-14 in the fourth quarter to tie the game with three minutes left. The Tigers answered with a drive to take the lead at 34-28 with 44 seconds remaining. West quarterback Tate Nagy needed just four plays and 37 seconds to get his team to the Blue Valley 1-yard line where he completed the comeback on the next play. Sportsradio 810 WHB’s Tim Spoerl was on the call for the epic score.
Team of the night
Olathe South – it had been a tough season for the Falcons. Just one win on the season to go along with close losses to Mill Valley and Olathe West, South was looking for a game where things would finally go its way. Friday at Lawrence the Falcons got that game jumping on the Lions early on their way to a 40-28 win over Lawrence.
Big Winner (s)
Fort Osage – The Indians have been banged up all season losing multiple quarterbacks along with star tailback Ryver Peppers for most of the year. Fort Osage is starting to get healthy and play good football and showed that with a 15-8 win at Grain Valley Friday. The Indians could be a dangerous team down the stretch and into the playoffs.
