Shawnee Mission NW celebrated Homecoming, by knocking off the previously undefeated Olathe East, final score 31-21.

The Cougars were led senior quarterback, Logan Morley. Shawnee Mission NW, got on the scoreboard first, when, Morley kept it on an option play, from 8 yards out. Jack Williams nailed the conversion, and the Cougars led 7-0.

The Hawks promptly, took the lead with two quick scores. Milo Burton, scored on a 23 yard, jet-sweep. Less than two minutes later, Nate Lampkin, scored on an 8-yard run. Cameron Speier was perfect all night on his conversions. The Hawks led 14-7.

After an excellent kickoff return, gave the Cougars a short field, Morley executed a perfect play action pass, to Cade Alholm. The defense bit on the fake, Alholm, was behind the defense. One play drive, 36 yards, and the game was tied at 14.

The Cougars took the lead late in the half, on a tough 1-yard run, by John Whitener. With Williams conversion, the Cougars went to the locker room with a seven-point lead.

Morley got his second touchdown pass, when he connected with, Joshua Mackiewicz, for a 25-yard score. Mackiewicz, looked to be stopped on the 10-yard line, but with a quick stop and pivot, he broke two tackles on the way to the end zone.

When the Cougars, did bog down, in the red zone, Williams nailed a 31-yard, field goal.

The Hawks had one more scoring drive. Quarterback Jack Cornell led the Hawks using a hurry up offense. Cornell connected. with Desmond Washington for a 19-yard score, but that was the final score of the game.

After the game, Cougars, head coach, Bo Black, was asked about his quarterback.

“(Morley) He played a great game, he’s a three-year starter, for us, and that might be the best game he’s had for us,” Black said. “He ran the offense efficiently, made some great runs for us, and great decisions.”

The Cougars improve their record to 3-2, and will be home next week, as they host Olathe South. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 4-1, and they will be home next, as they do battle with, Lawrence.
