Odessa quarterback Michael Scott had one those nights he will never forget in the Bulldogs 22-19 comeback win over rival Oak Friday.

Facing a third-and-13 and trailing 19-14 with just 2-minutes and 30-seconds left in the game, and needing a big play, Scott delivered, as he connected with Garrett Young for the eventual game-winning 48-yard touchdown.

“That was an improvised play,” Odessa coach Mark Thomas said. “It was a scramble drill and Garrett Young. … he followed his scramble rules and did what he was supposed to do and Michael found him (for the touchdown).”

After both teams traded 3-and-outs to start the game, it was Oak Grove who got on the board with a 44-yard field goal from Diego Perez, which gave the Panthers an early 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Odessa needed 1:08 to take the lead, as Scott found Trey Sanders running down the far sideline for the 54-yard touchdown that put the Bulldogs up 7-3 with 1:52 left in the first quarter.

The Panthers took the lead right back on their next series, as first-year head coach Ryan Schartz was in his bag of tricks, calling a reverse for his talented running back, Noah Spencer. Spencer was able to get loose and scored a 56-yard touchdown to give the Panthers the 10-7 lead.

Thomas said he was thankful that he and his coaching staff didn’t have to prepare for the veer offense.

“You would almost have to revamp your whole defense and design something to give you a chance to stop what they (Oak Grove) used to do,” Thomas said of the old Pat Richard offense. “Being able to prepare for teams that run similar things to what we do, and things that other teams are doing. … that does help a little bit.”

Oak Grove had its chances to take control of the game early in the third quarter. Trailing 14-13, midway through the third quarter, the Panthers appeared to snatch all the momentum as Mickey Seymour stepped in front of a pass intended for Amaury Powell and returned for, what seemed to be the go-ahead touchdown, however, the touchdown was disallowed as Oak Grove was called for an illegal block in the back.

With the win, Odessa will turn its attention to Center, while Oak Grove will host Clinton.
