Big plays in the third quarter propelled Bishop Ward to a 26-6 win over Baldwin on Friday night at Stump-Werner Stadium in Kansas City, Kan.

On three different plays, the Cyclones recorded rushing plays of 60 yards or more, two of those being touchdowns, and scored 19 points in the quarter.

"We made some adjustments (at halftime), and we talk about the first four minutes of the second half being the most important minutes of the ball game," Bishop Ward head coach Greg Duggins said. "I was happy with our execution in the second half. We played a clean ball game, and that's one thing we haven't done this year."

Defense was the story of the first quarter with each team coming up with a goal line stand.

In the second, the Cyclones found the big play.

A screen pass to Brice Johnson Jr., who finished the game with 272 rushing yards on 17 carries, ended in six points as the senior running back navigated 84 yards for the only score by either team in the first half.

Baldwin forced a three-and-out on the Cyclones opening second-half possession and put up their first score of the game on the ensuing drive.

The Bulldogs (3-4) converted a fourth down at the Bishop Ward 15, before Cody Buck ran it in from two yards out.

The PAT was blocked, and Bishop Ward remained on top, 7-6 with 6:50 left in the third.

"I think when you have those big plays, you stay up," Duggins said. "If they tie it, the mindset might be a little different. When you're able to make a block like that it raises the motivation, and we were able to get on track."

Just over one minute later, Johnson's 60-yard run moved the Cyclones to the Baldwin 11. A couple plays later, Jayvion Braden ran it in to put Bishop Ward ahead 14-6.

The lead grew to 14 thanks to another TD run by Johnson, a 69-yard score that made it 20-6 at the 2:09 mark of the third.

With less than one minute to go in the third, Jashaun Holliday took a reverse 72 yards down the sideline to cap the third quarter burst and push the lead to 20.

"I think it's a good learning experience," Duggins said. "A lot of these kids are still learning to win. This is a good feeling, but we have to get ready for Osawatomie next Friday night."

Bishop Ward (5-2) racked up 520 yards of offense, paced by Johnson's 200-plus yards on the ground to go along with 84 receiving yards and two scores and Aiden Milliren's 207 passing yards.

Baldwin totaled 330 yards of offense, led by Jack Harvey who rushed for 113 yards and threw for 101 yards. Samuel Darnell caugh six passes for 74 yards.

The Bulldogs will host Wellsville next week.
