Staley moved to 4-2 Friday with a 26-24 win against Liberty, after a 10-point fourth-quarter comeback.

The Blue Jays opened with solid field position and quickly reached midfield. Running back Anthony Wenson got the bulk of the work with seven carries and the last one going for a two-yard touchdown to give Liberty a 7-0 lead.

Staley countered with a balanced attack as Cole Robertson made plays through the air and on the ground to drive the Falcons deep into Blue Jay territory. From there, Robertson connected with Jayven Stallings for a 12-yard touchdown. An unsuccessful extra point attempt left the Falcons trailing 7-6.

The first play of the ensuing drive spelled disaster for the Blue Jays as Wenson fumbled and Staley’s Bo Faubion recovered. The Falcons were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and punted the ball back.

The Blue Jays added insurance to the one-point lead on their second drive of the frame when Christian Kuchta completed a 64-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Revels.

Trailing 14-6, the Falcons went on a lengthy drive but faced fourth-and-1 from the Blue Jay 16-yard line. Liberty attempted to gain the yard on the ground, but Staley’s defense stood tall and maintained its lead going into halftime.

Staley gained a couple of first downs on its first plays of the half but failed to generate more momentum and punted. A solid return from Ricky Ahumaraeze got Liberty into Staley territory where Eli Ozick converted a 43-yard field goal to give Liberty a 17-6 lead.

The Falcons got back in a rhythm as Robertson connected with various receivers. Following a 20-yard run, Robertson and Stallings got their second touchdown of the game from 20-yards out. A successful two-point try pulled Staley within a field goal at 17-14 with five minutes left in the half.

Liberty bounced back quickly and got the lead back to two scores when Wenson notched his second score of the game from six yards out. The Falcons failed to respond on the ensuing drive as Robertson fumbled in Liberty territory and went into the final frame trailing 23-14.

Staley’s defense captured the momentum on the second play of the fourth quarter with an interception. Four plays later, KV Stone broke into the endzone on a seven-yard run but the extra point missed, leaving Staley trailing 24-20.

The Blue Jays appeared to have another shot to extend their lead on their following drive but were halted at the Falcon 24-yard line. Ozick got another shot to kick from 40+ yards but missed, opening the door for the Falcons.

Robertson and Stallings continued to make big plays with a 33-yard gain, followed by a 13-yard catch by Cleveland Luster and a 16-yard run from Stone. The Falcons took their first lead of the game when Don Daughtrey found the endzone from 17 yards out. The two-point conversion failed and Staley led 26-24.

Liberty started to mount a comeback with four minutes remaining but struggled to move the ball before Kuchta was picked off by Abel Swope, allowing Staley to run the clock out and secure the come-from-behind win.

Robertson finished 16-24 with 193 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Stone led the team in rushing with 162 yards on 26 carries and a score. Daughtrey averaged six yards a carry with 60 yards on 10 attempts. Stallings eclipsed 100 yards with 115 on eight receptions with the two scores.

Kuchta was 7-14 for 132 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Wenson had 82 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns. Revels racked up 75 yards on two catches.

The Falcons will host Park Hill South Friday.

Liberty is scheduled to host Lee’s Summit North Friday.
