Welcome to Five From Friday our weekly feature that highlights some of the best quotes, notes, stats and performances of the games Friday night.
Quote of the night
“That was, honestly, the best onside kick he’s ever had. I’ve never seen him do better than that. Everybody did their job, came through and smacked the kid that had the ball, and we were able to recover. I knew at that point that we had an opportunity to go down and score again.” St. Joseph Central coach Regi Trotter said of senior kicker and defensive lineman Gary Elder after his onside kick helped key a come from behind 63-56 overtime win over cross-town rival St. Joseph Lafayette.
Stat line of the night

Olathe West earned one the biggest wins in program history with a 20-6 victory over Olathe North. The Owls led 10-0 with just under five minutes left in the third quarter when an interception set up west deep in the Eagles territory. On third down the Owls went deep into the playbook with a receiver option throwback touchdown pass from Jake Scott to quarterback Mason McGavran. Andrew Pitkin from 810 Varsity was on the call.
Team of the night
Spring Hill – The Broncos beat Bonner Springs 54-6 to move to 4-0 on the season. Spring Hill is also 4-0 and working its way to a Frontier League title which would be there first since 1990.
Big Winner
Metro High School Football – There were three cross-state line games this week that were all great matchups. Rockhurst hosted Bishop Miege, Blue Valley West traveled to Raytown and Blue Valley North hosted Lee’s Summit North. Rockhurst, Blue Valley West and Lee’s Summit North earned the wins in fantastic football games. We need more of these games and not just schedules filled only or mostly with conference foes.
