Back atop the rankings in Class 5A, two-time defending state champion Mill Valley survived a test from the previously undefeated Lions in a Sunflower League showdown.

The host Jaguars scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters, methodically building a 21-0 lead.

Hayden Jay scored a five-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Tristan Baker ran in another TD from five yards out in the second.

And Jared Napoli streaked 77 yards with Jay’s pass just seconds into the third quarter.

Jay finished with 232 yards passing and 46 yards rushing and the Jaguars (4-0, 4-0) played turnover-free and mostly mistake-free football.

But Lawrence of Class 6A was within striking distance in the fourth quarter, despite trailing 21-0.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Avion Nelson scored on a three-yard run, capping an 11-play, 61-yard drive that took 5:46 off the clock.

Two possessions later, Nelson again finished a long drive -- this time on a 15-yard run.

But with their final chance, the Lions (3-1, 3-1) couldn’t find a third, as their drive that started with 53 seconds left and 92 yards to go came up short.
