Complete Box Score and Play by Play

If you come at Bishop Miege, you better not miss.

The Stags on Friday made everybody remember why they are the six-time defending state champs as they rolled Tonganoxie, 30-7.

Bishop Miege set the tone for the game from the opening kick as it took the first drive down the field and found the end zone on a 19-yard run by Josh Conklin. Surprisingly, Tonganoxie won the toss and deferred to the second half.

On their first possession, the Chieftains went three and out and it seemed like this game was going to get out of hand quickly, however, the teams traded punts before Bishop Miege doubled its lead as Timothy Dorsey hit Rohan Putz for 29 yards late in the first quarter.

Needing a score, Tonganoxie leaned on Tyler Bowden at the start of the drive, but it was a 34-yard catch by Dallas Bond, who set up the only touchdown for the Chieftains – a one-yard keep by Sam Kleidosty out of the Wildcat on fourth down.

After halftime, it was all Bishop Miege. The Stags shut down Tyler Bowden, who rushed for less than 110 yards. The Stags bottled him up at the line of scrimmage and when the Chieftains went to pass, they got after Blake Poje forcing him to overthrow his targets. Poje completed 9-of-20 passes for 78 yards and two interceptions.

The second interception was the most costly, which came after Miege’s first drive of the second half, which saw Dorsey keep the ball for 35 yards to push the score to 21-7. Poje’s pass was intended for Bowden, but it was underthrown.

Miege then marched down the field and delivered the final blow as Dorsey connected with Mack Moeller for three yards. Dorsey threw for 212 yards on 15 of 25 passing.

All week long the media, myself included, said Tonganoxie would run all over the Stags and that this would be the end of the run. But it was the Stags who outrushed the Chieftains 138-130, led by Jaylen Burch’s 74 yards.

That was fuel to the fire and motivation for Miege, who will play St. James next week with a shot at state on the line.

The Stags were also playing with heavy hearts and for team mom Amie Shull, who unexpectedly passed away on Thursday night. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Shull family and Miege seniors Luke and Logan Shull.
