Mill Valley’s Jacob Hartman is truly a jack of all trades.

Hartman, who primarily plays wide receiver, got the start at running back against Olathe West with Quin Wittenauer out due to injury.

In Wittenauer’s absence, Hartman led the Jaguars’ high-octane offense to a 38-point second quarter outburst that resulted in a 69-14 win at the CBAC Sports Complex.

Hartman finished the game with 222 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. He also had three catches for 20 yards.

“Jacob’s just a great kid,” Mill Valley coach Joel Applebee said. “He’s going to do whatever we ask. He’s going to do what’s best for the team. He’s obviously a very gifted wideout. We knew he (Jacob) was a great athlete.

“We knew we could put him in the backfield. We did the same thing with his brother (Ben). We had a feeling it’d be pretty similar. … I’m very proud of Jacob, he works really, really hard and it obviously shows (on the field).”

Leading 3-0 early in the first quarter, Hartman had a chance to show off his athleticism as he cut his way through the Olathe West defense for a 53-yard touchdown to extend Mill Valley’s lead to 10-0.

A pair of Jaguar turnovers gave Olathe West a chance to get back into the game as Alex Birge threw a 2-yard pass to Dane Hutchins to cut Mill Valley’s lead to 10-7.

“We preach to our kids all the time that it’s about us,” Applebee said. “We’re going to respect every opponent that we play. In the end it’s about us and how we prepare, I thought we had a great week and tonight they executed well.”

Not only did Hartman have a big game, so too, did senior quarterback Cooper Marsh.

Marsh, who missed the last two games against Gardner-Edgerton and Lawrence Free State, returned on Friday and it didn’t long for the senior to pick up right where he left off.

Facing a 3rd-and-14, Marsh couldn’t get a handle of a wayward snap from his center. Marsh picked up the ball and scrambled to his left, evading several West defenders, before throwing a dart to a wide open Kendrick Jones in the back of the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown to give Mill Valley a commanding 17-7 lead early in the second quarter.

“Cooper will be the first to tell you that he was a little rusty on Monday,” Applebee said. “He has such a great personality. … I felt like from the get-go he executed (the game plan) very well.”

Mill Valley put the game away on its next two possessions as Hartman scored his second of three touchdowns with a 6-yard run. A few plays later, Marsh and Jones connected again, this time for a 34-yard touchdown, which pushed the lead to 31-7.

Marsh finished the game with 185 yards and three touchdowns, while completing nine of his 17 passes.

Mill Valley is back in action on Friday when they host Olathe East, while Olathe West play Olathe South.
