The Missouri State High School Activities Association released the classifications and district assignments for the 2020 postseason.

The method for determining the classifications has changed from years past in a few ways. First the multiplier for private and charter schools was removed. That multiplier was based on school population only with a standard 1.35 multiplier by student. That has been replaced by a success multiplier for private and charter schools based upon postseason success over the last six years.

In football this affected a few schools most notably Vianney in St. Louis and Valle Catholic in St. Genevieve. Vianney went from Class 5 to 6 while Valle moved from Class 1 to 3.

The other change was how the classes were broken down by number. In the past the biggest 32 schools were put in Class 6. Then the 64 smallest schools were placed into Class 1. Class 2 was filled with the next 64 followed by Class 3 and 4 with 64 each. Class 5 was then given what remained.

This year Class 6 was given the top 32 and Class 1 was given 20 percent of the remaining schools. Classes 2-5 were filled with an even number from the remaining total.

The overall number was originally to be based on all schools playing 11-man football. This year with Covid-19 concerns MSHSAA offered an alternate fall schedule for football. Several schools mostly in the St. Louis area opted for the alternate fall.

The overall number for fall football participants was reduced by that number and the classification formula was applied. There are schools in the state that have yet to begin their season and have still opted to try to play football this fall, and they are in the current classes and districts. If they are able to begin their season, they will be seeded based on the games they play and play in the postseason. If they are not the districts that they were assigned will have less teams.
