Only a single point separated the most covered Chesty Lions of Lawrence High and the Gardner Edgerton Trailblazers Friday. After trailing most of the game LHS took the lead with 4:00 left in the game 35-34.

Things did not start out well for the Lions. Only minutes into the game GEHS linebacker Devonte Pritchard scooped up a fumble and 20 yards later scored the game’s first touchdown.

LHS running back Devin Neal had himself a game. Junior opened Lawrence’s scoring with a 50-yard run on their next possession. It wouldn’t be his last big play of the night.

It was a duel of dual number ones in the first quarter. Quarterback Teven McKelvey scored the next touchdown for Gardner on a 19-yard run. While his Lawrence counterpart, Tre Jackson tied the game with a 41-yard catch.

McKelvey then broke off a 47-yard run down the left side to give the Trailblazers a 21-14 lead. The senior quarterback would go on to double Gardner’s lead right before halftime with a two-yard plunge.

Midway through the third quarter Neal would pull Lawrence within a touchdown with six-yard catch on fourth and goal for his second touchdown of the game.

After a long drive ate up most of the third quarter, the Trailblazers were knocking on the door again. This time Jacob Butash punched in the touchdown. A missed extra point would put Gardner up 34-21 with 11 minutes left in the game.

Two minutes later Devin Neal would strike again. This time an 82-yard run pulled the Lions to within a score.

It looked like Gardner might be able to salt the game away, but a drive stalled at the LHS 40 yard-line. After lining up to go for it a pooch punt was boomed into the end zone for a touchback. The Lions would have four minutes and 80 yards to try and win the game. Devin Neal would only need 16 seconds to get those 80 yards. Just like that Lawrence had the lead 35-34.

As time expired, a 54-yard field goal came close to giving Gardner Edgerton the win, but the Chesty Lions headed back to Lawrence with the W.
