Every year it seems there is one team that really comes out and shocks everyone to start the season.

This year is no different.

I knew coming into the year that Grain Valley had a chance to compete in Class 5, however, I didn’t expect them to be one play away from being a perfect 4-0 to start the season.

Grain Valley opened the season with a thrilling 46-42 win over Fort Osage. You see, that win was monumental for the Eagles in sense.

Why?

Well, for starters, the Indians had won four straight games against Grain Valley, three of which weren’t close, and two of the four losses sent the Eagles home in the postseason.

The most impressive result so far, at least to me anyway, was how they completely dominated a very talented Grandview team from the very first whistle of the game.

The Bulldogs, like the Eagles, have a chance to make a deep run in Class 4 this season, so you’d think it would be a very competitive game, however, it wasn’t. Grain Valley cruised to a comfortable 49-28 win, it was a statement win of sorts for the Eagles. A win that sent shock waves through the entire state of Missouri.

More news and notes:

Now, at the beginning of the season I said I’d be keeping my eye on the progression of one team. And that team was Blue Springs South.

Yes, I know the Jaguars are 0-4, however, outside of one game, the Jaguars have been competing, but they’ve come up short. They’ve lost some heartbreakers to start the season, including the last two games they’ve played against Park Hill and Raymore-Peculiar.

With that being said, South is extremely inexperienced at several key positions, but I will tell you this, they’ll be a dangerous team at the end of the season.

Another team that has been fun to watch is Maryville.

The Spoofhounds are coming off an impressive 46-42 win against St. Pius X. With the win, Maryville is in the driver seat to potentially win the MEC.
