Lately I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the anonymous quote:

“Everything is temporary, Emotions, thoughts, people and scenery. Do not become attached, just flow with it.”

It could be taken in a fairly dark way of nothing good lasting forever, but it’s a good mindset to have as we begin a new football season. The players for teams completely change out every four years in high school sports. Even the Royals World Series team has just one player who hasn’t left (though some have come back) in the last six years.

Take the Olympics for example. It’s a rarity that an athlete competes in more than two Olympic games after spending much of their life preparing for the games.

So how does this apply to the upcoming football season?

Embrace it all, the good, the bad, the memorable, because truly this season of football and life is temporary both for players and parents.

And even though everything is temporary, there are the memories and legacies. The scenery and pageantry of crisp Friday nights. That’s one of the things I’m personally the most excited about for 2021. So many teams are on the cusp of turning one or two good seasons into being bona fide top tier programs in the metro.

Schools like Odessa and Rockhurst that had their seasons cut short by the virus. St. Pius X allowed just six points in the state championship but came up short. Talk about some hungry programs. Others like Raymore-Peculiar are out to prove that 2020 wasn’t just a one-year deal and are ready to build their own legacy as the area’s best team in Class 6.

As we get things fired up over the next few weeks, remember just as the good is temporary, so are the losses and the bad things. Here’s to more good, than bad this season.
