Football is a fantastic sport for many reasons. It’s a great team game. Its action packed, and it can really bring a community together.
For the people who play football the experience can be life changing. Maybe not huge changes but you are definitely a different person once you have played football.
I’ve been covering football in the Metro for more than 25 years and year after year I continue to see one main theme from the coaches in the area. Yes, they love football and want to win games but most importantly they want to make better people out of the kids who play.
There are a lot of stories of what players and coaches do off the field. Every program is doing something where it gives back to its community or help others in need outside the community or country.
The one program I will highlight from this summer is St. Joseph Benton. The Cardinals got a new coach in the spring and this summer they took to the streets to help on the south side of St. Joseph.
On June 9th the Cardinals helped a neighbor by painting a house that was much in need. New coach Kevin Keeton said it was great to be able to have his players give back.
“It was good to be able to get out and help,” Keeton said. “There are people in need around our school and it fantastic to see the kids and coaches pitch in and make something better for someone.”
There are stories like this all over the Metro. So, while you are cheering the touchdowns on Friday nights cheer a little harder for the accomplishments off the field as well.
