Olathe South stops Leavenworth

Leavenworth, Kan. — The Leavenworth football team played two very different halves in Friday’s football game against Olathe South. The Pioneers trailed 15-0 after the first half and had gotten within 15 yards of scoring twice. The second half saw Leavenworth turn the ball over twice and incur some costly penalties, however, as the Falcons ran away with the 37-6 win.
Leavenworth falls to 0-3 with the loss while Olathe South improves to 3-0.
“We regressed in some areas tonight, but we did a lot of good things too,” head coach Kevin Kopecky said. “It’s a different feeling tonight. Obviously we’re not pleased with the outcome, but there are some things we did well and we’ll work on the things we didn’t do so well.”
Olathe South took the lead with 2:10 left in the first quarter when Brad Gourley broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Dalton Rook found Greg Fry on the 2-point conversion to make the score 8-0 at the end of the period. At the 7:28 mark in the second the Falcons pushed the lead to 15-0 with a 4-yard run by Fritz Wilbur and a successful kick by Mike Butler.
It looked like Leavenworth would score a few minutes later, but the drive stalled at the 6-yard line and Alex Waugh’s field goal attempt was off. Mark Dabeck, making his first start of the year at quarterback for the Pioneers, completed a 19-yard pass to CJ Baker to move the ball to the 10 and Isaiah Ross ran it four more yards, but that was all the blue and white could get.
