Fans bought tickets for a football game at Lee’s Summit North Friday night.

What they saw was more of a track meet.

It was a race the Broncos won by a nose, beating St. Joseph Central 44-41 in a game that thrilled the fans with a number of offensive highlights. It also ended a seven-year homecoming losing streak for North (1-2).

The offenses were on display, but it was the Broncos’ defense that came up big in the second half.

North shut Central out in the second half with a defensive performance that included two key turnovers. One was a fumble recovery on a punt deep in Central territory that led to a touchdown.

The other was a strip and 37-yard return by linebacker Zach Lepper, which set up Lucas Guilfoil’s 21-yard game-winning field goal.

North coach Ty Kohl said the difference between the first half and the second was simple.
