St. Thomas Aquinas stops tough Great Bend
By Matt Hallauer Special to PrepsKC
Great Bend struck first, but Nick Williams responded with a 90-yard kickoff return and the Saints kept the momentum going in a 21-14 victory.
The Great Bend offense had only mustered 69 yards on 25 plays when quarterback Mitch Kottas scampered for a 43-yard touchdown with three minutes, 37 seconds left in the first half. Williams, a senior running back, responded by slipping and twisting his way to a 90-yard kickoff return to tie it at 7-7.
The Panthers went three-and-out on the next drive before punting to their own 45-yard line, which senior wide receiver Clayton Henning returned 10 yards to the 35. On the next play, senior quarterback Paul Heit and Henning connected for a 35-yard touchdown with 1:41 left in the half.
Heit and Henning connected again with 6:20 remaining in the game, and the Panthers responded with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Kottas to Mauricio Uribe. The Panthers threatened on their final drive but time ran out on a Kottas-Uribe pass to the 8-yard line.
Heit completed 16 of 25 passes for 218 yards and led the team with 50 yards rushing. Henning tallied 132 yards on six catches.
