William Chrisman has eyes on the playoffs

The first official practice is just about 10 days away but William Chrisman is getting its camp work done in the last week of summer workout time.
The Bears have been hitting it hard late in the evening working to improve from last season’s 5-5 record. Chrisman showed a lot of improvement under first-year coach John Crutcher but it is not willing to rest on a .500 record heading into 2011.
The overall numbers at camp were down a little this year but the depth seems to be improving. Crutcher said the attitude is good and the players are really committed to making the program better.
“I tell you what the kids have really bought into this,” Crutcher said. “We are building on what we started last year and it is fun to be around these kids.
“It doesn’t matter where you go you always love the kids where you are at but there is something special about these kids. They’ve really bought in and we’ve really focused on becoming a team and playing as one, all of us focusing on one goal. It has been a really fun experience to be around these kids and see them come together as a group.”
The Bears did win five games and came within one game of the Class 5 playoffs. Chrisman fell to Raytown 40-30 in the last game of the year where a win would have given the Bears a trip to the playoffs and a winning record.
The dedication to improve is being led by a strong senior class. Chrisman senior DeMarco Hill said the team is focused on taking that next step in 2011.
“Our expectation this year is to go to state,” Hill said. “We come out here every day to get better and to achieve our goal to get to state.”
Hill also said that having camp so close to the start of practice will help the team be ready when practice begins Aug. 8.
“It kind of helps out a lot,” Hill said. “We come back from that dead week and get right at it.”
