It was just another ho hum year of football for Baldwin in 2010. The Bulldogs won their districts, qualified for the postseason and made another deep run into the Class 4A playoffs.

Baldwin was one of the top teams in Class 4A and played in probably the best 4A conference in the state. The Bulldogs opened the season with a win over Paola and 11 games later the season came to an end at the hands of the Panthers in the quarterfinals. Along the way Baldwin won 10 of 11 games with only a week No. 6 42-26 loss at undefeated 4A state champ Louisburg.

Even though the Bulldogs didn’t go further in the playoffs, coach Mike Berg was happy with his team’s performance.

“Our highlight was finishing the season with 10 wins, winning our district and advancing three rounds in the playoffs,” Berg said. “We got better all season at taking care of the football, blocking and tackling.”

Baldwin’s defense was one of the better squads in a tough Frontier League. The Bulldogs earned two shutouts and only allowed more than 14 points in three games with two of those games Baldwin’s two losses.

Last season 10 seniors saw a lot of time on both sides of the ball so the Bulldogs will see many underclassmen take a larger role this fall.

“We need to improve our depth and experience at the varsity level,” Berg said. “We had 10 seniors and most of them started both ways for us. Our JV and freshmen teams had successful seasons, but it’s a whole different game under the Friday night lights.”

The offseason has seen many players take advantage of weight classes while participating in other sports. Berg said his team has put in a lot of good work this year.

“The offseason program has been going great,” Berg said. “All of our players have a weights class and some of them are working out twice a day. Our staff has really encouraged our players to participate in track this year to help improve their speed. The focus of our program is to increase our players’ strength, explosiveness, agility, quickness, and overall speed.”
