Oak Grove fires Head Coach Carpino
By Dion Clisso PrepsKC Managing Editor
Oak Grove’s school board has decided not to renew the coaching contract of head football coach Pete Carpino. The move was announced Tuesday and it means Oak Grove will be looking for a new football coach for the upcoming season.
Carpino came to Oak Grove in 2007 after two years as an assistant coach at Blue Springs and six years as the head coach at Raytown before that. In Carpino’s first two years the Panthers went 7-3 just missing the playoffs. In 2009 Oak Grove suffered through a 0-10 record but rebounded with a 6-4 mark this past season which was the best turnaround of any program in the state. Carpino finished his tenure with a 20-20 record in four years.
“On Monday the school board made a decision to go a different direction with our football program,” Oak Grove Activities Director Jerry Girdner said. “Coach Carpino’s coaching contract was not renewed. It was only his coaching contract and not his teaching contract.
“The coach met with his players and his staff and shared the news on Tuesday.”
Carpino came to Oak Grove in 2007 after longtime coach Brad Gaines contract was not renewed after 20 years with the Panthers. Carpino was disappointed in the decision but said he was happy with his four years at Oak Grove.
“I really enjoyed coaching in Oak Grove the last four years,” Carpino said. “The kids are outstanding. I’ve met many, many outstanding parents. It’s great experience for me and my coaching staff. I have nothing but good things to say about the people of Oak Grove.”
Carpino is unsure what he will do next but said he would like to stay in coaching.
“I’ve had several offers in the last 48 hours,” Carpino said. “I’m not going to jump to any conclusions this early. I’m just going to wait and see.”
