John Derington joined The University of Kansas Health System Sports Medicine and Performance Center in August 2014. He is the head athletic trainer at Blue Valley North High School.

Derington is an integral part of the athletic program at the school.  He is at the school every day for practices and on the sidelines of games working directly with all student athletes. He works closely with coaches and parents to ensure they can perform at their maximum potential, but most of all that they are safe and injury-free.

“The best part of my job is building relationships with my student athletes and keeping them healthy,” said Derington. “I love the people I work with and enjoy having a job where I get to be outdoors at least 50 percent of the time.”

As the liaison between the athlete and a doctor, Derington plays an important role in facilitating and communicating proper treatment and care needed for injuries that require additional medical attention. This also includes proper rehabilitation techniques and training.
