Before Friday's game started, it was a simple task for both the Benton Cardinals and Chillicothe Hornets.

The unofficial, the overall thought was win, and you more than likely get to host a first-round playoff game.

Chillicothe was the team that took advantage of that theory, beating Benton 34-19 on Friday at Sparks Field.

The Hornets (3-6, 3-4 MEC) jumped out to a 20-7 halftime lead and traveled downfield on its first possession of the second half to go up three scores and eventually take home the victory. The Hornets now look to host Benton when the final standings come out this weekend for next week's Class 2 District 8 football clash.

Benton (2-7, 2-5) took a 7-6 lead with 1 minute, 43 seconds left in the first quarter after a Brennan Flint 5-yard touchdown scamper.

But the Cardinals couldn't maintain momentum as Chillicothe continued to pound the football behind junior Dawson Wheeler.

The Hornets top running back scored from 6 yards out to go up 14-7. Another TD gave Chillicothe a 20-7 lead at halftime.

And after the break, Benton was stopped on a fourth down from the 50-yard line, and Chillicothe drove the opposite direction to finish off the opening drive. Wheeler scored from inside the 10 for a 28-7 lead.
