Kansas roundup Week 4

A spate of high scoring conference blowouts highlight a roundup of the other Kansas City-area games played during Week 4 in Kansas.

Basehor-Linwood 50, Shawnee Heights 0
A stellar defensive performance and a well-rounded offensive output over the larger Class 5A Thunderbirds (2-2, 1-1 United Kansas Conference) could propel the Class 4A Basehor-Linwood (3-1, 2-1) into next week’s Kpreps.com Kansas Rankings Top 5.

The visiting Bobcats gave up just 80 yards of offense, forced four turnovers — two of them returned for touchdown —  and didn’t allow a third- or fourth-down conversion in the rout.

Quarterback Dylan Mussett completed 13 of his 15 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns to Jacob Coleman, while Marlon McDaniel led all rushers with 114 yards and a TD.

Blue Valley Southwest 35, Blue Valley Northwest 26
Jake Lamfers was involved in four of the Timberwolves’ five touchdowns as BV Southwest earned its first Eastern Kansas League win.

The senior running back had touchdown runs of 5 and 32 yards, caught a 30-yard score from Tanner Curry, and passed 11 yards for another on a trick-play completion. Lamfers accounted for 207 yards of offense in all for the Timberwolves (2-2, 1-2 EKL), who never trailed but had leads cut to within a field goal three times.

Winless Blue Valley Northwest (0-4, 0-3 EKL), which trailed 21-6 early in the second quarter, got within 2 twice in the second half, but couldn’t do enough despite forcing three fumbles in the game played at Blue Valley HS.

Bishop Miege 45, St. James 0
The top-ranked team in  Class 4A had no trouble with it’s EKL rival as the Stags (4-0, 4-0 EKL) scored 40-plus points for the third consecutive game.

The host Thunder (1-3, 1-3 EKL)  suffered six turnovers — four fumbles lost and two interceptions — and were outgained 480-157 by the four-time defending state champions in the game played at Mill Valley.

Brison Cobbins ran for touchdowns of 19 and 24 yards within the first four minutes of the game while quarterback Timothy Dorsey twice connected with Connor Doble on second-quarter touchdown passes. DeAunte Parker added two rushing TDs in the third.

Leavenworth 83, Turner 21
Jahawn Byrd scored seven times and rushed for 352 yards — averaging 14 yard per carry — and the Pioneers go their first win while more than doubling their scoring total for the season.

Byrd had five of his six rushing touchdowns in the first half as Leavenworth (1-3, 1-2 United Kansas Conference) built a 49-7 lead and led 62-21 at halftime. Byrd also returned a kickoff 86 yards in the first quarter in his highlight reel night.

The host Golden Bears (1-3, 0-3 UKC) lost their third straight since a season-opening win over Harmon.

Olathe South 54, Shawnee Mission South 24
The Falcons used 16-straight second-quarter points to turn a 14-all game into a rout to hand the host Raiders (3-1, 2-1 Sunflower League) their first loss of the season.

Andrew Nehrbass ran for three short-yardage touchdowns in the first half — two of them to give Olathe South (3-1, 3-1) the lead. His 4-yard score with 8:12 left in the first half put the Falcons up 21-14 and began their second-quarter run. He added a fourth TD in the third quarter on the way to 209 yards total on the ground.

Jack Roberts passed for two touchdowns — both to receiver Sam Macklin — and rushed for another for SM South.
