Milton Braasch led Shawnee Mission East to familiar territory Friday night as the Lancers downed Olathe Northwest 42-17 to return to the state quarterfinals for the fifth straight season.

Braasch scored three touchdowns on the night including a 51-yard scamper on the first drive of the game to put the Lancers on the board early in the first quarter.

He said the offensive line was “working their butt of like they usually do,” which led to open holes for him to run through.

“We always expect to score on every drive,” Braasch said. “Every time we score it’s party in the end zone and that set the tone.

“I think [scoring early] can have an impact on how [the opponent] is thinking. That’s happened to us before and it’s not good to immediately come back from a deficit. The more we can do that and come out on top quick, and start fast and be ready right of the locker room is better for us.”

SM East coach Dustin Delaney said if there’s a better play around he hasn’t seen him yet. He can always rely on Braasch, which he said is a big bruising back who is really fast.

He showed both his power and speed on a 45-yard run, which set up his second score of the game to give the Lancers a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

The rout was on.

Olathe Northwest added a field goal on the next drive, but they didn’t score its first touchdown until the third quarter when Brayden Koch hit Val Shirinian for 66 yards. However, East already scored four touchdowns and was in total control.

The Lancers didn’t play a perfect game though as they fumbled on two consecutive drives. Luckily the defense held and force Ravens punts.

“We didn’t play real clean,” Delaney said. “There’s some things we have to fix, and hopefully we’ll get them fixed for next week.”

Andy Maddox added on score on the ground and one through the air to Harrison Gooley for 62 yards for the Lancers. Peyton Wiklund capped the scoring for SM East with 7:52 play with a 14-yard score.

Olathe Northwest added a touchdown with a minute remaining.

Shawnee Mission East will host Blue Valley North for a chance to play Blue Valley or Olathe North in the Class 6A semifinals.
