Just what the Pioneer fans ordered and the players and coaches needed.

After a disappointing three-game losing streak squashed the momentum of a 2-0 start, the Leavenworth Pioneers’ football team came out Friday night for homecoming looking to reignite its sense of hope and ignite a potential postseason push.

Behind first half touchdown runs by Devin Johnston and Andrew Ativie in the first half, the Pioneers defeated Shawnee Mission North, 17-7, to move to 3-3 overall and get back into that winning groove with two weeks left in the regular season.

Johnston (25 carries, 107 yards rushing, 2-yard scoring run), Ativie (three carries, 38 yards, 29-yard touchdown, one reception for 42 yards) and Ingeon Jung (25-yard field goal, 1:18 left to go) led the Pioneer scoring attack.

“This is great, it’s my homecoming game, it’s perfect,” Ativie said. “It is amazing and the momentum we will get from this game is crazy. We were tired of losing and we showed it today. We hadn’t been doing what we were supposed to do...at practice we really stepped down and put our foot down to get the win.

“We just need to keep working hard at practice and do what we do best.”
