Excelsior Springs hosted Richmond, and kept their unbeaten streak alive as they outlasted the Spartans 28-20 in a hard-fought game. Both teams rely heavily, on the ground game.

The Excelsior Springs Tigers got on the board first, when Corbyn Hutchings powered through the line for a 2-yard score. Quarterback Peyton Soria had double duty as the place kicker and he converted the PAT.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Spartans fumbled the kickoff and the ball was knocked back ten yards into the end zone, where Ryan Nedblake recovered it for the score. Soria made the score 14-0.

The Spartans had a chance to score just before the end of the half. On 4th and goal from the 4-yard line, quarterback Trevon Alexander floated a pass to the back of the end zone that was knocked away by senior Landon Seely.

The Tigers had not given up a point through the first three games. That streak came to an end when Laine Todd took a squib kick, and spinning his way through defenders, he returned the kick 72 yards for a touchdown. Aiden Dorton’s kick was true and it was 14 - 7.

The Tigers scored on the next possession. A 63-yard drive with Soria keeping the ball and scoring on a 3-yard run.

Richmond answered on 4th and goal, as McCauley Bowers scored on a 1-yard plunge.

The fourth quarter was scoreless until 2:26 to play, when Soria scored on a 1-yard keeper.

The Spartans never gave up scoring with :15 when Andre Pritchett showed excellent reflexes catching an 11-yard touchdown pass from Alexander, after the ball was tipped into the air. Dorton’s kick bounced off the upright. After the Tigers recovered the on-side kick, they took a knee to end the game.

After the game Tigers head coach Mark Faubion talked about his quarterback’s ability to audible at the line of scrimmage.

“Tonight we left a lot of it in his hands,” Faubion said.

The Tigers and their 4-0 record will travel to Harrisonville next week to take on the 2 -2 Wildcats. The Spartans who are 1-3, will host the undefeated Lafayette County Huskers.
