Maryville’s run atop the Midland Empire Conference is over. And in shocking fashion.

The Hornets stormed out and seized control early, jumping to a 10-0 lead at halftime. Brett Shaffer’s 78-yard touchdown up the game even more, as the Hornets took a three-score lead midway through the third frame.

Maryville never could come back, and were shut out for the first time since a 35-0 loss to Platte County in 2006.

It was the first regular-season loss for the Spoofhounds since 2010 — a 21-14 overtime meeting against rival Savannah.

In between those two seasons, the Spoofhounds won state titles with perfect years in 2012 and 2013. They lost three times in the playoffs over the past three years.

The Hornets lost 61-14 last year to Maryville. It was their first win over the Spoofhounds since 2008.
