Olathe East almost pulled off the first upset of the season Thursday night at the College Boulevard Activities Center.

The Hawks led Hutchinson for most of the night until a late touchdown and two point-conversion game the Salt Hawks the 22-21 win.

East jumped out first on a 74-yard TD run by Tre Kearney midway through the second quarter. East would take that lead to the half. They would extend that lead to 14-0 on a Jack Mason 2-yard run with 6:27 left in the third quarter.

Hutchinson would answer with its first score on a 99-yard drive that ended with a Joesiah Galindo 1-yard TD run with 3:31 left in the third. The Salt Hawks would tie the game with Galindo’s second TD run with 8:54 left in the game.

Olathe East took the lead with just 3:55 left when TyJuan Lewis scored on a long catch and run to make it 21-14.

Hutchinson drove to the 2-yard line with just 1:45 left on the clock with Brody Smith ran it in to make it 21-20. Smith would run it in for the two-point conversion to give Hutchinson its first lead of the game.

East would drive the ball to the Salt Hawks 31-yard line but were unable to convert a fourth down and Hutchinson ran out the clock for the win.

East will try to bounce back next Friday with a game against Olathe North at the Olathe District Activities Center.
