Lawrence opened the season with an impressive 42-21 win over Shawnee Mission Northwest at Shawnee Mission North District Stadium.

The Chesty Lions jumped out to a 21-0 second quarter lead and never looked back. The win moves Lawrence to 1-0 while Northwest falls to 0-1. The win was also Chesty Lions’ Head Coach Dirk Wedd’s 100th in his career. This is Wedd’s final year at Lawrence before he retires after the school year.

The game’s first score came on a 50-yard TD pass from Lawrence quarterback Garrett Romero to Ekow Boye-Doe with 50 seconds left in the first quarter. Four minutes later Romero found Boye-Doe again from 12-yards out to make it 14-0 with 8:25 left in the second quarter. Five minutes later Hunter Krom ran in from the 3-yard line to make it 21-0.

Northwest got its first TD when quarterback Spencer Stewart scrambled for a 12-yard TD run with 3:12 left in half. The Chesty Lions answered right back when Krom broke off a 77-yard scoring run with 1:50 remaining in the second quarter.

Just more than an minute into the third quarter Romero picked up his third TD pass when he hit Jalen Dudley from 28-yards out. Northwest then got its next score after a blocked field goal led to a 1-yard Jamie Alexander TD plunge.

Krom finished off the scoring for the Chesty Lions with a 76-yard run to finish with 320 yards and three TDs in the win.

Northwest’s final score came when Stewart found Ty Lindenman on a 37-yard touchdown pass.

Lawrence will be at Shawnee Mission North next Thursday while Northwest will host Shawnee Mission East.
